Welcome to the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Online Learning Module, a mini e-learning course designed to increase your knowledge of this threatened prairie species and how you can join the fight to help save them.
Prairie dogs are fascinating creatures. They have families, raise pups, and interact socially. Unfortunately, many people use cruel extermination methods to kill prairie dogs in urban/suburban areas, on ranches and farmlands, and on public lands. When prairie dogs suffer, many other animals also suffer because (1) prairie dog burrows even in urban environments are homes for rabbits, salamanders, snakes, and burrowing owls, to name just a few, and (2) prairie dogs serve as prey for many species.
Rocky Mountain Animal Defense (RMAD) aims to stop the killing and injury of prairie dogs and the destruction of their homes. Our program focuses on the black-tailed prairie dog in Colorado and strives to serve as a model for prairie dog advocacy efforts elsewhere. Largely through the efforts of its volunteers, RMAD educates the public about prairie wildlife issues, mobilizes people to prevent killings, facilitates relocations, and advocates for humane laws and policies.
